- What reasons do you believe led Diana Nyad to accomplish her goals? Explain your answer using 3-4 sentences.
- In what ways was she able to maintain her focus? Explain your answer in 3-4 sentences.
- How do you plan to apply her determination, dedication, and discipline during this semester?
Diana Nyad is an awe inspiring woman and athlete. She was able to accomplish her life-long dream of swimming from Cuba to Florida without the use of a shark cage, and at the age of 64 years old. She swam 110 miles in jelly fish infested waters, which took approximately 53 hours long. Although her swim was 53 hours, her training took years, and her mental preparation was acquired over a life-time. She decided to do something everyone deemed impossible at her age, because she wanted to live the rest of her life without any regrets. She even thought about "how much life is left?", which made her drive even closer to her goals.
A leader always has the support of brilliant people, which are able to inspire and encourage each other. Her support team was a team of scientists and a trainer named Bonnie. The scientists within her team were able to track sharks and jellyfish and notify her about the imminent dangers ahead. Diana also draws inspiration from music that she listens to her when she is swimming. Music helps her gauge the distance that she swims and inspires her arms to push through with one more stroke. Bonnie has been able to help her with her mental perseverance, especially when she hallucinates due to exhaustion. Diana was able to maintain her focus by repeating a comforting mantra "Find a Way". She found a way to push through and succeed and accomplish her goal in life.
This semester I am a full time student, and I have to balance work, school, and my social life. I know that I have the perseverance to succeed, but I have to push through and make my dream of graduation a reality. I can't give up, especially when obstacles pop up in my life. My goal is my diploma, and that will be my inspiration. I will continue on my path, and my team consists of friends and family that provide support on a daily basis.
- Have your views about fast food and the negative effects it plays with heart disease and early death changed based on the video and weekly readings? Please explain your answer.
- What are some ways in which you feel you may limit the amount of fast food?
- What responsibility do you feel the CEOs should have (if any) in terms of their customers' well-being?
After reading a book called Fast Food Nation, I stopped eating most fast food. The video from this week’s module just reaffirmed my ideas about the negative effects of fast food. I have family members that have diabetes and heart disease, and a grandfather who passed away from heart disease. I have really tried to limit my intake of fast food except for pizza. When I do eat pizza, I’ll only eat one slice. I know that I must stay on my current path and eat healthy homemade food, which I try to do at least 6 days per week. When I do eat out, I usually eat at the veggie grill, because I know that there are a lot of veggies instead of fillers in my plate.
I think CEOs should consider what product they are selling and how the product can cause negative effects to the health of the consumer. The negative effects can have life- long repercussions on an individual. I understand that most companies are interested in profits, but the fast-food companies should have healthier choices on their menus. I know McDonalds started to incorporate salads, oatmeal, and wraps to their menus. Some companies are attempting to create a movement towards healthy choices.
I have chosen the fast- food restaurant called The Habit, because that is where I used to eat. I would usually have lunch at the habit twice a week before I became a vegetarian. I do not have a Habit restaurant in my immediate area. I live near CSULA, but I would frequently visit the one located in Alhambra. When I searched for that restaurant, I found one in Alhambra and one in South Pasadena. Since I live near a university, I think the students try to eat cheaper and fast. There are many McDonalds and Jack in the Box near me. There is also a Burger King and Taco Bell. Sometimes students pick the cheapest available food and aren’t too concerned with nutrition. The Habit is a little more expensive than McDonald’s, and they also have healthier alternatives to burgers and fries.
Finally, I went to my lab and wanted to pick something semi healthy to eat from a local fast-food restaurant, and I selected McDonald’s. I picked an item that can be found on the lunch and dinner menus, which is the Southwest chicken salad. The Southwest chicken salad is 680 calories, which isn’t too bad considering the burgers alone are more calories. I would select the Southwest chicken and a cup of water with ice. I haven’t had a soda in over a year, and water has become the norm at mealtime.
Environmental Health is the overall health of a person. It's not only about the physical health of a person, but the environment in which they live. The Pasadena Health Department is an agency where they operate as part of the Health Department. This doesn’t only include the people who live there, but the people who visit Pasadena. They do this to ensure that everyone’s health is protected, and everyone’s safety is ensured. They pursue to make sure that everyone has a safe and healthy environment. This could include air quality, sanitation, and so many more. Air quality is the air that they breathe, while sanitation is the cleanliness of an area in which to keep clean.
- What is environmental health?
- Name 3 of the Services offered.
- Why is it important for us to be aware of the importance of Environmental Health?
- What can you do to enhance your local environment to ensure a longer and healthier life? (Try to think of at least 3-5 concrete things.) Include these in your initial discussion post as goals to try over the rest of the week.

There are many services offered at Pasadena, but here are three. They are Urban Wildlife Management, Tobacco Control, and Animal Care & Control. Urban Wildlife gives guidance to Pasadena staff when dealing with wildlife at Pasadena. Tobacco Control at Pasadena is there to ensure, they protect the health of the Pasadena Community. This program is especially made for the youth, to ensure they don’t get the harmful long-lasting effects of tobacco, or tobacco smoke. Animal Care & Control is a nonprofit organization, that works with SPCA on providing animal care and services for homeless animals. They also provide services for owned animals; their hard work and dedication is committed to treating all animals with compassion and care that they deserve.
It is very important for us to be self-aware of the environment surrounding us. We need to ensure that the air quality is safe for all to breathe. We also need to reduce, reuse, and recycle, this helps the planet stay clean and stay green. We would need to conserve water by using cold water when washing clothes and turn the faucet off when brushing our teeth. One other thing we would need to do is volunteer for community and beach clean ups. This is to ensure that the overall health for everyone is safe, in the environment in which they live.
One thing, that I could do is replace the regular cleaning products with natural alternatives products. All those chemicals can hurt our environment especially if they get washed down the drain. I could also use more eco-friendly materials and stop using so much plastic products. I have stopped using plastic straws and started using reusable bamboo straws. The flavor is different when I use the bamboo straws, I would say it is a “clean” flavor.
Discussion 4Why do you think people addicted to illicit drugs find it so hard to stop? Reflection
I remember the DARE program which failed, because it sparked so much curiosity in school age children. I read that the DARE program failed because it instilled fear instead teaching about addiction. It was more of a scare tactic than an educational resource, and some children were more adept to experience drugs because of this program. Having an open line of communication is always the best option with any subject when dealing with children. I think we need better resources to get drug addicts help. We need to get people off of the streets and maybe some mental health care and detoxing facilities. I think drug addiction is a disease and not necessarily a bad habit. |

Mini Unit Assignment 2

Reflection
According to the CDC, the leading cause of death in the United States is heart disease. The most common type of heart disease is coronary heart disease, which usually leads to a heart attack. Stress and poor nutrition both contribute to an increased risk of heart disease. Stress can accompany many behaviors such as smoking, overeating, and no real physical activity such a depression. When people get stressed, they tend to need a crutch or stress reliever, which can be displayed as snacking or binge eating. Those episodes of binge eating are usually the consumption of unhealthy foods filled with saturated fats and food additives. Smoking can also increase risk factors by inhaling the chemicals, and no physical activity can lead to weight gain. |
Mini Case Assignment 3One Bad Decision
What I think that I would be able to do to prevent myself from being “THAT GUY”, is starting now by making good decisions. The good decisions that we make now could help change our future. We need to be aware of our environment and always cautions at all times. Most people think about the present but, most of us should think about our future. Most of us don’t think about possibly being “THAT GUY” but in an instant our lives could change. An intoxicated driver can pose a threat not only to themselves, but to others. The person drinking at the moment doesn’t think about what could possibly happen once they start driving. Nobody should be drinking before they drive or especially during driving. The decisions that we make needs to be a well thought out answer. Nobody wants to lose their loved ones due to their actions or others. The facts that you find once you do research about driving under the influence is terrifying.
